The Shankh — the sacred conch shell — is one of the most powerful spiritual objects in Hinduism. Lord Vishnu holds it as one of his four divine attributes. Its sound is the primordial Om — the vibration of creation itself. Where you place it determines the energy it brings.
The Right Direction: Northeast is Best
According to Vastu Shastra, the Northeast direction (Ishaan Kona) is the most sacred zone of the home — governed by Lord Shiva. The Northeast receives the first rays of the morning sun, making it a zone of maximum positive energy.
| 🥔 Vastu rule: Place the Shankh in the Northeast corner of your puja room, on a clean cloth or wooden surface, at eye level or above. Never on the floor. |
Placement by Room
Puja Room (Most Auspicious): Right side of the main deity idol on a clean wooden platform. Opening faces East or Northeast. Clean regularly with a soft dry cloth.
Living Room: North or Northeast corner on a shelf. Keep clutter-free and well-lit. Fresh flowers nearby enhance the energy.
Main Entrance: Right side of the door as you enter — wards off negative energy from entering the home.
Office Desk: Northeast corner of the desk, facing East — invites Lakshmi's energy of prosperity into your work life.
Direction the Opening Should Face
The mouth of the Shankh should always face East or Northeast so vibrations radiate inward. Never place opening facing South or Southwest.
Where NOT to Place a Shankh
| Location | Why to Avoid |
|---|---|
| Bathroom or toilet | Nullifies the Shankh's energy completely |
| Floor level | Sacred objects must always be elevated |
| South wall | Associated with Yama in Vastu — not suitable for Lakshmi objects |
| Bedroom | Unless in a dedicated puja corner |
| Kitchen | Fire energy conflicts with the water energy of the Shankh |

Two Types of Shankh
Dakshinavarta (Right-Handed): Rare, clockwise spiral. Directly associated with Lakshmi. Keep wrapped in red cloth in Northeast — worship only, do not blow.
Vamavarti (Left-Handed): The common variety blown during pujas. Blow at sunrise and sunset to clear negative energy from your home.
| 🔔 When to blow: At the start and end of morning and evening prayers. Scientifically shown to reduce bacteria in the air. |

Which direction should a Shankh face?
The mouth of the Shankh should face East. In the puja room, place it in the North-East corner facing East for maximum benefit.
Can I place a Shankh in the bedroom?
Not recommended unless you have a dedicated puja corner. The bedroom is a space of rest — placing sacred objects there without a proper altar can create energetic imbalance.
Can I keep more than one Shankh?
Yes. Multiple Shankhs in different locations are perfectly fine. Each creates its own field of positive energy.
