Lord Hanuman is unique among Hindu deities in that his directional placement carries specific Vastu significance that most people are either unaware of or follow incorrectly. While most deities are placed facing North or East, Hanuman has a different requirement — and understanding the reason behind it makes the placement more meaningful.
Which Direction Should Hanuman Face
Hanuman should face South. This is because South is the direction associated with Yama, the god of death, and with negative energies, obstacles and malefic forces in Vastu Shastra. By facing South, Hanuman stands as a guardian against these energies — his face turned toward the source of negativity, protecting the home and everyone in it. This is why Hanuman idols are traditionally placed at the entrance of forts, temples and homes facing outward to the South.
You, the worshipper, sit or stand facing North toward Hanuman during puja — facing the auspicious North direction while Hanuman faces the South to protect it.
Where Specifically in the Home
The most powerful placement for Hanuman is at the main entrance of the home — on the right side as you enter, facing South (inward or outward depending on the position of the entrance). If your home entrance faces North, Hanuman facing South inside the entrance is ideal. At the minimum, the South wall of any room is considered Hanuman's wall.
For a home mandir with multiple deities, Hanuman is placed on the right side of the altar. He should not be placed opposite a Shiva linga or directly beside Lakshmi — in traditional iconography these combinations are considered inauspicious. Hanuman and Ram together on the same altar is the most harmonious combination.
For an office desk, place Hanuman in the South-facing corner of the desk. For a car dashboard, facing the driver naturally achieves the correct alignment.
The Panchmukhi (Five-Faced) Hanuman
The Panchmukhi Hanuman depicts all five faces of Bajrangbali simultaneously — Hanuman (East, destroyer of enemies), Narasimha (South, removes fear), Garuda (West, removes evil eye), Varaha (North, grants prosperity) and Hayagriva (above, grants knowledge). This form offers complete protection in all five directions simultaneously, which is why it is particularly powerful for home placement.
For the Panchmukhi idol, the primary Hanuman face should face South following the same principle. The idol is typically placed at eye level on a dedicated platform or the right side of the home mandir.
Which Day to Worship
Tuesday (Mangalvar) is the primary day of Hanuman puja — Mars (Mangal) rules Tuesday and Hanuman is the warrior deity of Mars energy. Saturday (Shanivar) is the secondary day — Saturn's negative influence is specifically pacified by Hanuman worship. Offer red flowers in a bowl in front of the idol. Recite Hanuman Chalisa. Light a sesame oil lamp on Saturdays specifically.
Never pour oil or any liquid directly on the idol. Offer flowers in a bowl placed in front. The idol surface should always remain dry.
Which Hanuman Idol is Best for Home
For a home mandir, the Panchmukhi Hanuman in the 9.5 inch size has the scale and presence appropriate for a dedicated altar. The 4 inch dual tone is right for a desk or compact shelf. The Bust form at ₹2,499 concentrates all five faces at close eye level — particularly powerful for desk and altar placement. For protection at the main entrance, any Hanuman idol placed at the right height and facing South is appropriate.
